Born on December 20, 1990, in Auckland, New Zealand, and raised in Sydney, Australia.

Early Life

Robert Whittaker's martial arts journey began at age 7 with karate, where he earned a junior black belt in just four years. He later trained in hapkido under Henry Perez and transitioned to mixed martial arts (MMA) during his teenage years. At 15, he began full-time MMA training, setting the foundation for his future career.

Entry into MMA

Whittaker made his professional MMA debut on March 14, 2009, at the age of 18, defeating Chris Tallowin via first-round TKO. He quickly rose through the ranks, compiling a 9–2 record over three years in regional promotions like Xtreme Fighting Championships and Cage Fighting Championships.

The Ultimate Fighter

In 2012, Whittaker was selected for The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes, a reality TV series featuring Australian and UK fighters. He won the welterweight bracket, defeating Xavier Lucas in the final. His victory earned him a UFC contract and a $25,000 "Knockout of the Season" bonus.

UFC CAREER AND MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Whittaker debuted in the UFC in 2012, initially competing in the welterweight division. He later moved up to middleweight, where he found greater success. In 2017, he became the first Australian to win a UFC title by claiming the interim Middleweight Championship at UFC 213 against Yoel Romero.
